For the fourth year in a row, TBWA members, along with volunteers from the city’s Lakes and Ponds Program, Clark University, and Worcester State University, hosted Science Day at Coes Reservoir for fifth graders from Columbus Park Preparatory School. On a Friday morning in June, the students and their teachers walked to Binienda Beach, where they were welcomed by collegiate and professional environmental scientists. Five stations were set up for hands-on science activities using Coes Reservoir as an outdoor laboratory. The students used microscopes to identify phytoplankton and invertebrates, observed fish collected from the lake with a seine net, and learned how aquatic life connects to water quality. They built two small dams to compare construction methods used in nature by beavers and in the real world by humans. Finally, the learned about the scientific method b setting up an experiment to determine how different chemicals impact water quality. This wonderful partnership with a neighborhood school is something we look forward to continuing next year!
